The New England Patriots’ 2024 season has been hard to watch. There was a glimmer of hope as the Pats faced off against a faltering Miami Dolphins this past weekend, but that quickly faded. We’re only 5 weeks in and it already looks like a playoff run won’t be happening this season.
Why Are the Patriots so Bad This Year?
Here’s a breakdown of the major problems the Patriots must address if they want a shot at improving this season.
Weak Offensive Line
The Patriots’ offensive line is currently viewed as one of the weakest in the NFL, despite the organization investing in multiple high draft picks. Their offensive line continues to be the Patriots’ biggest problem. Just a week after Jacoby Brissett was sacked five times and hit 10 times, he faced even more pressure in a 30-13 loss to San Francisco, where he was brought down six times and hit another 10. This lack of attention to vital positions raises concerns about the team’s ability to compete effectively.
Lack of Coaching Experience and Star Talent
Jerod Mayo is in his first year as head coach of the New England Patriots and is expected to encounter some growing pains. Some fans are directing blame at Robert Kraft for the team’s limited spending during free agency, which has left the Patriots with minimal top-tier talent on the roster. Additionally, there are concerns about Alex Van Pelt’s play calling abilities. As the season progresses, it will be crucial for the team to address these challenges.
Injuries
Injuries have continued to weaken the Pats’ depth chart this year. Andrews, Wallace and safety Kyle Dugger (ankle) all left the 49ers game in the first half and didn’t return. There are currently 12 players listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins.
Turnovers
The New England Patriots have fumbled the ball an embarrassing seven times so far this season. They currently sit at 20th in the league for turnover differential.
The New England Patriots attempted to address their receiving and offensive line issues by drafting a new tackle and two wide receivers this offseason. However, these players are still rookies and have yet to develop the awareness necessary to excel in the league. Fans hope the Patriots can find a way to improve and secure a few consecutive wins, enhancing their chances for a playoff run. That said, it remains to be seen if this team can turn things around.
