The San Diego Padres very well could be among the top contenders in the National League in 2025.
San Diego already has a star-studded roster. The Padres added some more talent around the trade deadline and finished the season with 93 wins. San Diego surprised some people and was among the top teams in the National League.
Unfortunately, the Padres no longer are in the playoffs, but they fought hard. The 2025 season could be their season, but it will take a few key moves this offseason to help put them over the top.
FanSided’s Zach Pressnell suggested a reunion with All-Star reliever Tanner Scott should be the team’s “top priority” this winter.
The Padres went out at the trade deadline and moved multiple top prospects in order to acquire left-handed closer Tanner Scott from the Miami Marlins,” Pressnell said. “Scott was one of the most sought-after players at the deadline, which drove his price through the roof despite him being on an expiring contract.
“Ultimately, the deal worked out well for the Padres because he was great with the team. But they didn’t get a division title or World Series out of having him on the team. Now, with Scott entering free agency, the Padres need to do anything they can to bring him back in 2025. He may be a bit expensive, but he would look great in the seventh, eighth, or ninth inning for the Padres for the next three or four seasons.”
Scott was arguably the best left-handed reliever in baseball in 2024. He finished the season with a 1.75 ERA across 72 appearances and now will cash in this winter in free agency with a market value projected to be at $60 million over four years.
It certainly makes sense to bring him back to San Diego.
