Luton Town midfielder Ross Barkley is set to join Aston Villa in a deal worth £5million, according to a report by talkSPORT.
Luton Town are poised to cut ties with the Liverpudlian this summer following their relegation to the Championship. They finished in the bottom three in the Premier League in this past campaign along with Sheffield United and Burnley.
Barkley, 30, was a key player for the Hatters last season after joining them on a free transfer last August. He made 37 appearances in all competitions for the Bedfordshire outfit and chipped in with five goals, as well as getting four assists.
In this latest update regarding his situation by talkSPORT, he is expected to head out the exit door now and link up with Aston Villa. Unai Emery’s side are preparing for Champions League football after ending up 4th in the top flight table behind Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.
Luton Town ace to leave
Barkley has got his career back on track at Luton Town and losing him will be a blow.
However, it seems inevitable that he was going to depart and his exit will free up space and funds in their squad to bring in other reinforcement as they look to mount an immediate promotion push from the second tier.
Barkley started his career at Everton and rose up through the academy ranks of the Toffees.
He was a regular for the Merseyside club at various different youth levels before going on to play 179 times for their first-team, scoring 27 goals.
The former England international, who made 30 caps for the Three Lions, also had loan spells away from Goodison Park at Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United to get some experience under his belt.
Recent years
Chelsea lured Barkley away from Everton in 2018 but his time down south didn’t go to plan.
He made 100 outings during his time at Stamford Bridge and found the net on 18 occasions.
Aston Villa had him on loan back in 2020 and are now bringing him back to the Midlands.
Barkley also had a stint in France with OGC Nice before Luton Town tempted him back to England.
