Drew Lock must be feeling like why the NFL hates him. He was drafted by the Denver Broncos, washed out there because of some awful offensive coaching, and then was part of the trade that sent Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks to Denver. Lock maybe thought he had a chance at starting with his new team but Geno Smith was given the job in 2022 as QB1.
Lock did get a chance to start two games for Seattle in 2023 due to a Smith injury, and Lock was not awful. In fact, in Week 15 against the Philadelphia Eagles, Lock was good enough to maybe earn a chance to start somewhere in the league. He was not going to displace Smith with the Seahawks, though. So, as a free agent this past offseason, Lock went to the New York Giants.
The hope for Lock was that he might be able to compete with the overpaid Daniel Jones to be the starting quarterback. Money talks loudly in the league, though, and New York was basically forced to start Jones. Lock sat on the bench except for 12 snaps this season. He threw eight passes, completed three of them, and for only six yards. That is not enough sample size for the Giants to truly evaluate how good Lock could be for them, though.
On Monday, the Giants announced they were benching Jones as the team was 2-8 (sadly, one of those victories came against the Seahawks) and Jones was, once again, extremely ineffective. One might assume that this would be Lock’s chance to prove what he is capable of. Instead, New York announced that third-string quarterback Tommy DeVito would start in place of Jones.
DeVito did start six games in 2023, and he was not awful. But he hasn’t played a down this season. According to FOX NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Giants head coach Brian Daboll chose DeVito because the coach knew he only had seven games left to try to save his coaching career. To be fair, choosing DeVito over Lock seems to imply that Daboll wants to be fired as there is no real argument to say DeVito would definitely be better than Lock.
During his time with the Seahawks, Lock appeared to be a good person and a great teammate. He might be able to be a serviceable starting quarterback in the league. Many 12s probably want Lock to get a chance at QB1 because he deserves that. That the Giants chose DeVito over Lock only means New York is just another team to root against.
