The Oklahoma Sooners have had a season that no one could have imagined they would have. From the injuries that just haven’t stopped coming, to the firings, to the turnover problems, an offense that isn’t good, a defense that’s elite, to just having an awful first SEC season.
This year has been wild. The Sooners’ fan base has absolutely gone through something that they just aren’t used to going through. The quarterback Ferris wheel hasn’t helped, and neither has the new search for the new offensive coordinator. But, they have remained resilient and stayed the course.
And, let’s just be honest for a second — the elephant in the room is the stress that Brent Venables has had on him. Not only does he have to hear from everyone that he should be fired constantly, but also, of course, let’s take some time to applaud him and his wife for what they are going through with her health.
It’s been tough, and he let all of the emotions out after the game, where they upset No. 7 Alabama.
“The harder it is, the more epic the story.”

“Absolutely amazing,” head coach Brent Venables said. “We finally did the thing that winning requires. And man, all three phases, how well they complemented each other. These guys man, they’re amazing. Their guts, toughness, and they punch first, they punched back, and tonight we finally punched last… There hasn’t been anything easy about this season, the harder it is, the more epic the story. It’s not about what you become, it’s about what you overcome.”
This game was huge, and man, Venables deserved this. He’s been doubted, and the team has been doubted, and rightfully so, let’s not get that twisted. But, they have prevailed. When everyone counted them out of this game, they won in a way no one thought would be possible.
Congratulations to Brent Venables, his staff, and the fans.
