Senator Tommy Tuberville lies about recruiting Patrick Mahomes II to Texas Tech

Former Texas Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville says he recruited Patrick Mahomes II, a claim that Mahomes refutes.

No one is shocked that a sitting United States senator has been caught in a lie. What’s more, Texas Tech fans are even less surprised that the person lying is former football head coach Tommy Tuberville who was a miserable human being in several ways during his brief time in Lubbock.

Wednesday, while signing an executive order at the White House, President Donald Trump acknowledged Tuberville (who is now a senator from Alabama) and his role in making the executive order become reality. During that ceremony, Trump said that Tuberville coached Patrick Mahomes II in college.

“Tommy Tuberville, a great coach,” Trump said. “You know, his quarterback was named Mahomes, he was a great college coach. And I said, ‘How good was he?’ he said, ‘You don’t want to know how good.’”

Of course, in the moment, Tuberville had to let the President continue on with his remarks without correcting him. And later, on the Megyn Kelly Show, Tuberville did admit that he left Texas Tech before Mahomes got to campus.

That part of what Tuberville said is true. He departed Texas Tech after the 2012 season while Mahomes didn’t enroll at Tech until 2014.

Of course, every Red Raider fan knows that Mahomes’ coach in college was Kliff Kingsbury who is now the offensive coordinator of the Washington Commanders. What’s more, every Texas Tech fan is aware that Kingsbury is the one who discovered Mahomes as a high school player and recruited him to Texas Tech.

However, Tuberville told Kelly that he recruited Mahomes while Tuberville was still head coach in Lubbock.

“I never coached him,” he said. “What happened is I recruited him, and then I left to go to another school, but I got to be very good friends with him.”

However, that appears to be a blatant lie. That’s because Mahomes himself has said that he never remembers meeting Tuberville.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Mahomes said on Thursday, “He did not recruit me at the time. I don’t remember if I ever got to meet him or not.”

The fact that Tuberville is trying to make himself look like he was a good coach who saw the talent in Mahomes when Mahomes would have been just a junior in high school is not surprising. After all, Tuberville was one of the most untrustworthy coaches Texas Tech fans have ever seen come through the program.

Now, he is blatantly lying about recruiting Mahomes to Tech. According to 247Sports.com, Mahomes received his scholarship offer from Texas Tech on January 11, 2013, which was after Tuberville left Tech to become the head coach at Cincinnati in December of 2012.

Still, Tuberville has the gall to say that he even became “very good friends” with Mahomes. It is the latest reason for Texas Tech fans to despise the man who took over in Lubbock after the controversial firing of former head coach Mike Leach and ran a proud program into the ground in just three seasons.

In the end, it is no shock that yet another person is trying to advance their reputation by glomming onto Mahomes, the biggest name in American sports. However, Texas Tech fans won’t stand by and let Tuberville get any credit for being associated with Mahomes in any way. Tuberville remains one of the most disliked people in West Texas and his outright lie about his relationship with Texas Tech’s most beloved alum shows exactly why.
