The NFL Draft is still over two months away, but business will pick up a little bit with the Scouting Combine at the end of the month.
This is the point of the offseason where you start to see more mock drafts, which will certainly get the attention of many. Here’s one more to consider. Athlon Sports’ Luke Easterling recently put out his full three-round mock draft, and here’s how his picks went for the New Orleans Saints.
- Round 1, 9th Overall: Shemar Stewart, EDGE, Texas A&M
- Round 2, 40th Overall: Benjamin Morrison, CB, Notre Dame
- Round 3, 71st Overall: Elic Ayomanor, WR, Stanford
- Round 3, 93rd Overall (via Commanders): Gunnar Helm, TE, Texas
Getting a new pass rusher should be a top priority for New Orleans. They have several free agents going into the new league season (Chase Young, Payton Turner, Tanoh Kpassagnon), and then they haven’t got the development needed from Isaiah Foskey. With Stewart, I don’t like the idea of a raw prospect and having to be patient.
The Saints do need a cornerback if they can’t keep Paulson Adebo in free agency, and even then, getting another might not be a bad play. I also like the idea of adding some offensive weapons to the mix.
The bottom line is that the Saints need a lot in this draft. They need immediate starters. Free agency needs to play out, and New Orleans has to make several big decisions on some of their own players. Their first domino to fall will be getting a new head coach, which should happen shortly after the Super Bowl.
Once a new coach is in place, the Saints will need to assemble their new coaching staff and then get to work on roster management. Everyone meets with everyone at the Senior Bowl, and that’s most of the front office’s first exposure to prospects. So, New Orleans isn’t really behind in the process, but will have a lot of work to do in a very quick timeframe.
