Oklahoma Sooners lose a defensive player to Big 12 foe that they could have greatly used during the 2025 season
The Oklahoma Sooners are losing players left and right to the transfer portal. But, that seems like a very normal thing these days, for any team, really.
This time, it was a defensive back who had all of the physical measurables to develop into a great player.
Sooners lose DB Makari Vickers to Big 12 team
Vickers was a highly-rated recruit, classified as a four-star prospect from Robert F. Munroe Day School in Tallahassee, Florida. He was ranked as the No. 81 player nationally by Rivals, No. 82 by ESPN, No. 102 by 247Sports, and No. 118 by On3.
He was also considered among the top safeties and cornerbacks in his class. Vickers committed to Oklahoma over offers from Alabama and Michigan, which was a big recruiting win for the Sooners under coach Brent Venables.
In his freshman year (2023), Vickers played in eight games, recording eight tackles and one pass breakup. However, he missed four games due to injury. His sophomore season in 2024 was less successful; he appeared in only four games, recording just one tackle, which led to a reduced role and eventually his decision to enter the transfer portal.
Following a disappointing sophomore season, Vickers decided to transfer. He committed to Colorado and will have three years of eligibility remaining. Vickers stands at 6-foot-1 and has been noted for his speed and versatility, playing both cornerback and safety. His athletic prowess extends to track and field, where he competed in sprints and jumps.
Makari Vickers’ transition to Colorado marks a new chapter in his college football career, where he will look to regain prominence and contribute significantly to the Buffaloes’ defense. Sooner nation will surely miss him, as he could have had a somewhat bigger role as a depth piece on this Oklahoma secondary.
