In recent years, Derrick Henry has established himself as one of the top running backs in the NFL, characterized by his forceful and aggressive running approach. At a commanding size of 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 247 pounds, Henry combines both remarkable speed and power, posing a significant challenge for defenders, as the Baltimore Ravens are experiencing firsthand during their training camp.
Following Saturday’s practice, Ravens nose tackle Michael Pierce, who at 355 pounds is the largest player on the defense, expressed the difficulties of handling Henry in the early days of camp. “It’s not fun,” Pierce shared with journalists. “I typically face a double team, and just when they let up, I end up confronting Derrick Henry charging through the gap, faster than you’d expect for his size. I’m just relieved he’s now on our side.”
Henry’s transfer to the Ravens is a significant relief for the team, who previously saw him as a formidable opponent during his eight seasons with the Tennessee Titans. In four regular season games against the Ravens, Henry tallied 277 yards and three touchdowns. This doesn’t even account for his standout 195-yard game in the 2019 Divisional Round, where he also managed to throw a touchdown.
Pierce recalled past encounters with Henry: “I’ve faced him in games before, and one was particularly rough. Knowing what he’s capable of, I can say it’s a challenge, but thankfully, he’s now making those plays for us.”
Despite advancing into his thirties, Henry continues to show impressive performance, rushing for 1,167 yards and scoring 12 touchdowns in the last season. His addition strengthens the Ravens, which boasted the league’s leading rushing offense last year, and his partnership with MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson promises to be formidable.
