Kamari McGee posts after team galvanizes around his ejection to defeat Purdue

Kamari McGee was the victim of one of the dumbest officiating calls in the history of college basketball. It’s rare to see the world of college basketball come around a single bad call, but this was one of those. He was trying to get around an illegal screen when he made incidental contact with Trey Kaufmann-Renn in the groin. Supposedly, that’s enough for the officials to send him packing with a flagrant two foul call.

However, that call that should have hurt Wisconsin and doomed their chances to beat Purdue may have done just the opposite. After the game, head coach Greg Gard said, “I think actually McGee getting the ejection, threw a little bit more gas on the fire, and really united us.” After the game McGee didn’t say much but did post in reply to the social media team for Wisconsin.

Wisconsin social media posts after the Purdue game, “We got your back, Kam”

After the game, the Wisconsin social media team sent out a picture of the basketball team in the Purdue visitor’s locker room with a message: “We got your back, Kam.” In reference to how the Badgers rallied at half-time to win it for McGee’s unjustifiable ejection. McGee replied to it with an even more simple message of: “4L” and a heart emoji. The 4L stands for “for life.” After the game, UW posted a video of him and the team, and it’s worth a click.

After the ejection and the first half ended, Purdue had a one-point advantage. The ejection and the galvanizing of the team at half-time led them to go on an impressive run. They scored 58 points in the second half to Purdue’s 47. This team came in fired up and ready to win and do it for McGee. It’s this connectivity that Gard has pointed to throughout the season as the reason this team is as good as they are. Plenty of teams have highly talented players, but few teams can play as cohesively as this season’s Badgers.
