Ryan Day admits what Urban Meyer told him about the Ohio State job when he was first hired
The pressure of being the head coach at Ohio State is a level that not many people understand from the outside. After the loss to Michigan in the regular season, Ryan Day’s seat was a little warm at 66-10 in his career at Ohio State.
Of course, Day proved he was capable of getting over the top with the best run college football has seen after that. Still, the pressure of the job made getting the job done all that more important.
In a recent interview done by The Podcast, Day revealed what Urban Meyer told him once about the Ohio State job. It is something that the Buckeyes head coach clearly still keeps with him.
“Urban Meyer told me this when I took the job, he said this job was going to be isolating,” Day said. “It’s probably one of the things I’ve underestimated the most. It’s an isolating job, that’s just the truth. Its brought my family and I closer together because we spend more time together because it is isolating.”
Day took the job as the head coach in Columbus in 2019 and is 70-10 overall as a head coach. A missed field goal in the semifinal of the College Football Playoff in 2022 may just be the difference in Day having two National Championships on his resume.
The run of beating Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and Notre Dame to win the National Championship turned the public view of Day by the fanbase.
“There has been some tough times, but that’s the job. That’s the job,” Day admitted. “We understand that and I think that’s what makes this place so great is that everyone cares so much.”
Day is just one of three active college football head coaches to have a National Championship win on their resume. The feeling around the program has never been better.
