Former and current UConn stars Sue Bird and Paige Bueckers shared some hilarious quips about Geno Auriemma.
Geno Auriemma has coached an incredible amount of elite players throughout his iconic 39-season tenure as the UConn head women’s basketball coach.
Among the very best are Sue Bird and Paige Bueckers.
Bird ended her career as one of the best women’s basketball players of all time. And while Bueckers is still playing for Auriemma at UConn, she appears to have an incredible professional career ahead of her.
While Bird and Bueckers both have great relationships with Auriemma, they also aren’t afraid to throw some shade his way. And both of them shared a few funny stories about their college coach during Bueckers’ appearance on ‘A TOUCH MORE: THE PODCAST’ with Bird and soccer legend Megan Rapinoe from the WNBA All-Star weekend that released on Saturday.
“Coach always makes sure to humble me that he’s making way more than I am,” Bueckers said of Auriemma.
“Ask him what he was making at 22,” Bird responded with a smile.
“Like, you’re old man,” Bueckers continued. “I know you got more money than me.”
When asked what her favorite “Geno-ism” is, Bueckers answered, “It’s just the exaggerations. Like, you’re the worst player he has ever coached, you’re the dumbest person he has ever met. All these exaggerations and like, I know you’re lying, so I don’t care what you say.
“My favorite thing is when he’s like, ‘I’ve been coaching for 40 years, like I’ve seen it all.’ And then the next practice he’ll be like ‘that’s the dumbest s*** I’ve ever seen, I’ve never seen that before in my life,'” Bueckers added. “And I’m like ‘Bro, you can’t have both. You’ve gotta pick one. have you seen it? Or have you not?”
Bueckers and Auriemma clearly have a great back-and-forth relationship.
