Stetson Bennett has had much better games than he did against the Dallas Cowboys in Sunday’s preseason opener–but he still ended on a high note.
The Los Angeles Rams backup tossed four interceptions, but still won the game with a last-second touchdown pass as the Rams picked up a 13-12 victory.
Bennett finished 24-of-38 passing for 224 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions. After his fourth pick, X/Twitter exploded.
“Stetson Bennett might have to get an Uber back to the facility,” said NFL writer Doug Farrar.
“This is like the inverse of what Steph Curry did yesterday,” added The Ringer’s Steven Ruiz.
“Trey Lance hasn’t been perfect but Stetson Bennett today…sheesh,” chimed in NFL Network’s Jane Slater.
“Appears that basically all of Stetson Bennett’s interceptions today look similar to one another. Having issues with missing underneath defenders,” said analyst Crissy Froyd.
However, Bennett saved his best for last, leading a game-winning touchdown drive that included a six-yard scoring pass to Miller Forristall on 4th-and-goal.
“And just like that Stetson Bennett has won me back over,” a fan said after score.
“Holy Stetson Bennett!!” someone else added.
“Stetson Bennett for president,” a third person chimed in.
Bennett, who was away from football last season while dealing with what sounds like a mixture of burnout and other mental health struggles, is expected to back up Matthew Stafford this season.
He took all of the snaps for the Rams on Sunday and got his money’s worth, for better or worse.
