The leaked footage of Scottie Scheffler’s arrest last weekend has resulted in scrutiny for the Louisville Metro Police Department and Detective Bryan Gillis.
Gillis arrested the No. 1 ranked golfer as he attempted to enter Valhalla Golf Club early last Friday morning. Scheffler was charged with felony second-degree assault on a police officer, along with third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from officers directing traffic.
Louisville police announced that while those charges will not be dropped, Gillis will actually also face discipline for failing to have his body camera on during the incident.
WDRB’s Jason Riley researched Gillis’ history with the department, and its not the first time he’s been punished.
“Louisville Police Det. Bryan Gillis has been disciplined several times for wrecking his vehicle & missing court, according to his personnel file,” Riley tweeted. “He was also suspended 5 days for doing ‘ donuts’ in his police vehicle while on duty with an intoxicated civilian in a “Code 3″ fashion.”
Riley went on to share a photo listing all the times Gillis has been punished by LMPD, though he did also include that the veteran officer has received numerous commendations and been praised for his “strong work ethic, perseverance and positive attitude.”
Gillis claimed in his report that Scheffler “refused to comply” and “dragged” him to the ground as he tried to drive off.
Gillis also said he suffered “pain, swelling and abrasions” to his left knee and wrist and his $80 police uniform pants were ruined.
Earlier today, Scheffler’s lawyer Steve Romines issued a warning to Louisville police after it was revealed that the charges wouldn’t be dropped.
“Our position remains the same as it was last Friday,” Romines said, via ESPN’s Jeff Darlington. “I am not negotiating as we have no interest in settling. I am preparing to litigate as needed and the case will be dismissed or we will go to trial because Scottie did absolutely nothing wrong.”
