Sheffield Wednesday have been unable to build on their superb showing against Plymouth on the opening day.
The Owls looked spectacular against Wayne Rooney’s side, netting four goals and claiming a whopping 31 shots.
Anthony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama retained their places on either wing following a strong end to last season and both looked lively, with the former picking up an assist.
Musaba has started all three of Sheffield Wednesday’s matches since, while the team have failed to score a single goal.
While the poor run of form definitely isn’t all down to the Dutchman, his lack of end product is proving to be a real concern for Danny Rohl.
Anthony Musaba’s form is a huge worry for Sheffield Wednesday
Musaba made 34 touches against Millwall and only managed 70% passing accuracy. He pulled off zero successful crosses, no shots on target, only succeeded with 25% of his dribbles and also lost 77% of his duels.
The 23-year-old also lost possession 15 times and failed to pick up any free-kicks.
His problems in the final third have become a running ‘theme’ at Wednesday, and while his goal return last term was good, it could have been better if he had a better end product.
The winger was expected to improve after a pre-season training camp under Rohl, but he only seems to have gone backwards and it is proving to be a massive issue for the Owls’ attack.
Jamal Lowe and Ike Ugbo certainly can’t do it all by themselves and they will rely heavily on both wingers, but when neither Musaba or Gassama are putting in crosses or winning dribbles, it is a real struggle for any of them to find the back of the net.
Danny Rohl has plenty to choose from
Rohl has a number of options that he can bring into replace Musaba which may well be a risk, but it’s probably one worth taking.
Olaf Kobacki has gained very little action since joining the club but will be raring to go, while Marvin Johnson has impressed when he has played this term – albeit it coming in defence.
The 33-year-old is an excellent crosser of the ball and could make a huge impact on their attacking threat.
Callum Paterson is also still at the club despite his links away, and after scoring a brace against Grimsby Town, perhaps he should now be considered to come back into the team.
