John Calipari’s Suffering Sees No End as Arkansas Community Receives Distressing Update Ahead of Texas Clash

The Hogs and ‘Horns share identical 16-11 records, with a 5-9 tally in the SEC, tying them at 11th in the league standings. Sure, Arkansas notched a signature win over No. 15 Missouri on Saturday, but if they can’t get past Texas on Wednesday, that victory loses its shine. And despite already taking down Texas once this season, Arkansas can’t afford to get complacent, especially with injuries piling up. As if losing Boogie Fland wasn’t bad enough, they just took another hit.

Arkansas junior forward Adou Thiero went down late in the second half of Saturday’s win over Missouri, aggravating a back injury. Coach John Calipari didn’t offer much insight postgame, just that Thiero tweaked his back. At first, it seemed like his status for Wednesday’s showdown against Texas was up in the air.

Well, the SEC’s latest availability report confirms it—Thiero is officially OUT.

Losing Thiero is brutal for Razorbacks men. The 6-foot-8 has been a revelation this season, posting career-high numbers in nearly every category: over 16 points, six rebounds, two steals, and two assists per game.

He was second in scoring when the Hogs beat Texas in Austin, dropping 14 points. And now? The Razorbacks’ rotation shrinks to just seven guys. That’s not exactly ideal heading into a must-win game. Moreover, Trevon Brazile is the obvious fill-in but he’s been struggling recently. He hasn’t scored more than five points since Jan. 22. Other options? Jonas Aidoo brings size and defense but slows things down. Billy Richmond III could work in a small-ball lineup, but that’d hurt Arkansas on the boards.

Then we have Karter Knox, who’s on the SEC Availability Report himself. But thankfully, he’s listed as probable.

And just in case that wasn’t enough to worry about, the Longhorns are also fighting for their postseason lives and are hungry than ever. Leading the charge for Texas is Freshman sensation Tre Johnson.

The SEC’s top scorer at 20.2 points per game, Johnson is an absolute problem for opposing defenses. He’s projected as the No. 7 overall pick in the NBA Draft and has been lighting it up all season. This matchup could have been a firecracker with Johnson going head-to-head against Arkansas’ own freshman star, Fland.

But Fland is still out following thumb surgery. Before his injury, the 5-star recruit was considered a fringe lottery pick. Now, he’s slid to No. 25 in mock drafts. However, despite all this, can Hogs still find a way to March?

Can John Calipari’s crew still reach the big dance’s field of 68?

Remember when John Calipari took over Arkansas and instantly turned them into national title favorites? Yeah, that feels like a lifetime ago. The legendary coach brought in a top-10 recruiting class and a loaded transfer portal haul. The hype was real. But reality is a whole different story.

Arkansas’ season has been an absolute rollercoaster. They looked dominant in December, only to turn around and drop five straight to start January. In SEC play, they’ve been one of the league’s worst teams. To put it bluntly: this team hasn’t lived up to the expectations.
