Norwich City winger Borja Sainz has emerged on the radar of Athletic Bilbao, according to El Correo.
Norwich City may have to fend off some interest in the attacker in the upcoming January transfer window. He is under contract with the Championship side until the summer of 2026 so they are under no pressure to sell him just yet and can wait for the right offer.
Sainz, 23, joined the Canaries in June 2023 on a three-year deal and has since been a key player for the East Anglian outfit. He has made 45 appearances in all competitions and has scored 11 goals, three of which have come this season already.
In this latest update regarding his situation by El Correo, Athletic Bilbao are keeping tabs on his progress in England as they weigh up a potential future swoop. The La Liga side finished 5th in the table in the last campaign.
Norwich City winger eyed
Sainz was born in Leioa, in the Basque Country, so is eligible to play for Athletic Bilbao. They continue to only sign players born in the region.
He started out at Lagun Artea before joining Bilbao in 2012.
The attacker spent five years with the Spanish top flight club before switching to Alaves.
Sainz initially broke into the B team at Campo de Fútbol de Mendizorrotza before going on to play 44 times for their first-team as a youngster, scoring two goals.
He had a spell at Real Zaragoza before leaving Spain for a new challenge in Turkey at Giresunspor.
The former Spain youth international found the net on nine occasions for the latter before heading over to the Football League when Norwich City came calling.
Sainz has adapted well to life with the Canaries and helped them reach the play-offs in his first year under their former boss David Wagner. However, they were beaten at the semi-finals stage over two legs by Leeds United.
What now for Norwich City man?
Athletic Bilbao are being linked and time will tell whether anything concrete emerges over the next few months ahead of January.
He fits the bill for them and would give them more competition and depth on the wing.
Norwich City won’t want to lose him though and are in a strong position due to him still having years left on his deal. They drew 1-1 at home to Sheffield United last time out and play Swansea City away this weekend following the international break.
