Sunderland were beaten by Portsmouth in the pursuit of young goalkeeper Conal McDermott, a report from The News has revealed.
Sunderland had a busy summer transfer window and while they were able to bring in some new prospects, new manager Regis Le Bris’ focus was on signing some more experienced players at the Stadium of Light.
He did just that too. Among those with plenty of Championship pedigree to join were Alan Browne and Chris Mepham (loan), and it will be hoped it sets them up for an improved campaign on Wearside. It certainly looks to have done so, with the Black Cats the only side left with a 100% win rate from four league games.
It looks to have been a good window at the Stadium of Light, but it has now emerged they have had to ago without one new starlet.
It was confirmed earlier this week that Sunderland’s Championship rivals Portsmouth had sealed an agreement for Northern Irish goalkeeper Conal McDermott, fending off interest from a number of clubs to get the move over the line.
Now, as per The News, Sunderland were among those who were also in pursuit of the teenage ‘keeper.
While Pompey have agreed a deal with Derry City to bring McDermott in on a scholarship deal, they are just waiting on international clearance so he can play in competitive games. He has been training with his new club this week.
A starlet missed out on
Sunderland have been a great club for developing young players over the years and it has helped them land some great prospects. They’ve fought off interest in their top youngsters thanks to their clear pathway to the first-team while striking deals to sign talents from other academies too.
Some might have thought that would give them an edge over Portsmouth in the McDermott battle as well, but that has not proven the case. From Pompey’s perspective though, this looks to be a great coup.
The Academy of Light is a great place for the progression of young players, especially goalkeepers.
Anthony Patterson has become the mainstay number one in the north east since coming through the youth ranks while Jordan Pickford preceded him. Upcoming prospect Matty Young is touted to be the next on that path as he gains senior experience on loan at Salford City aged just 17.
Continuing the run
As the focus turns back to on-pitch action after the international break, Sunderland will be determined to continue their impressive start to affirm their place as early promotion contenders.
Four wins from four games with one goal conceded and 10 scored has made for quite the start. Le Bris has quickly become an adored figure on Wearside after some uncertain times and it will be hoped he can continue this run and lead them to promotion.
Academy graduates such as Patterson, Dan Neil and Chris Rigg will be key in doing so, but McDermott won’t be following in their footsteps after joining Portsmouth instead.
