West Brom were linked with Djurgardens IF man Besard Sabovic in the summer and the midfielder has now confirmed the interest.
West Brom were able to bring several new faces to the club in the summer transfer window and it has helped them enjoy a fruitful start to the campaign.
After four games, the Baggies sit in 2nd. They’ve claimed 10 points from a possible 12, winning three times and drawing once at this early stage.
The permanent deal for former loan star Mikey Johnston is no doubt the statement signing of the lot. However, the move for Torbjorn Heggem looks to be a great one, while the loan and free transfer markets have also been used well.
As with all clubs, there were some players on the West Brom radar who didn’t end up joining. Swedish midfielder Besard Sabovic was among those linked, and the 26-year-old has now confirmed the interest from the Championship club.
Speaking with Fotbollskanalen, the Djurgardens IF ace stated that the Baggies made an approach for his services and admitted that it would have been a ‘fun step’ for him to make.
However, he’s happy with the Allsvenskan club and remains committed to delivering his best as long as he’s there. Sabovic said:
“It’s no secret that West Brom were interested in this summer.
“Of course, it was fun that there was interest, and it would have been a fun step.
“But I’m fully focused on staying in Djurgarden as long as I have my contract, and then I’ll do everything I can in these last games to get as high up in the table as possible.”
Back in for Sabovic?
Given Sabovic’s contract situation, it’s certainly not out of the question that West Brom revive their previous interest in the Macedonia-born midfielder when the January transfer window comes around.
Sabovic is only under contract with Djurgardens until this winter. It could mean he’s available for nothing when the window opens, opening the door for him to head out and start a new chapter.
Having admitted the interest was ‘fun’ to have drawn, it could be a tempting move for Sabovic if he is indeed available for nothing come the start of 2025.
Barring brief stays in Turkey and Russia a few years ago, Sabovic has spent his entire career with Djurgardens. After coming through their academy, he has chipped in with 10 goals in 92 games from midfield.
Is he needed?
Midfield is an area West Brom were able to add to in the summer transfer window, so it would be interesting to see if they feel the need to bring another in.
Ousmane Diakhite signed upon the expiry of his contract with TSV Hartberg while Uros Racic is in on loan. They will compete with the likes of Alex Mowatt, Jayson Molumby and Callum Styles for a starting spot.
Sabovic’s potential availability could be viewed as a chance too good to pass up and with Racic only in on loan, it would remove the need to sign someone once his temporary stay comes to an end.
