Southampton face an uphill battle to keep star defender Kyle Walker-Peters at the club long-term, sources have told Football Insider.
The 27-year-old’s contract is currently set to expire at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.
Southampton are in negotiations with the full-back over a potential renewal but sources say an agreement is looking unlikely at this time.
Russell Martin’s side are yet to score a point after four league games and are the bookmakers’ favourite to suffer relegation this term.
Walker-Peters was the subject of interest in the summer window but stayed at St Mary’s Stadium past the 1 September deadline.
However, with a relegation dogfight looming it is believed negotiations will be very difficult.
Southampton facing uphill battle in Walker-Peters talks
The two-cap England international has already stayed loyal to the Saints after their relegation to the Championship in the 2022-23 campaign.
He notched three goals and three assists in 47 games last term as the South Coast club were promoted via the playoffs.
Walker-Peters, who can play both on the left and right-hand side of the defence, has started all four Premier League games in the new season.
He came through the ranks at Tottenham before leaving to join the Saints in 2020 on an initial loan move – which was later made permanent.
