Where LSU Women’s Basketball Stands in Latest Bracketology After Loss to Texas
The LSU Tigers are a projected 2-seed in the latest ESPN Bracketology, which was updated Saturday night.
The Tigers lost to the Texas Longhorns, a projected 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament, in the semifinals of the SEC Tournament. Despite that, the Tigers are still projected to be a 2-seed when the March Madness field is announced on Sunday, March 16th.
Despite missing Flau’jae Johnson for the entire game and Aneesah Morrow exiting with an ankle injury a couple minutes into the third quarter, the Tigers hung around with one of the best teams in the country. With under a minute left, this was a four-point game, but the Longhorns went on to win by seven after some late fouls by the Tigers as they tried to extend the game.
On Saturday night at 10:35pm EST, Charlie Creme updated the Women’s NCAA Tournament Bracketology. Coming into Saturday night’s game, the Tigers were projected to be a 2-seed, but with the loss to Texas, there was a chance they’d drop to a 3-seed. However, Creme believes the Tigers are still a top-eight team in the country.
In Women’s Basketball, the top-three seeds in each region host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. As a 2-seed, Creme currently projects LSU will host 15-seed Southeastern Louisiana, 10-seed Nebraska and 7-seed Oklahoma State in Baton Rouge.
There are a lot of potential interesting matchups in Creme’s Region 2. JuJu Watkins and the USC Trojans are the 1-seed; Kim Mulkey’s former team, the Baylor Bears, are the 4-seed; the Tennessee Volunteers, who have become one of LSU’s biggest rivals, are the 5-seed; and the Iowa Hawkeyes, who LSU has faced in the National Championship and Elite Eight the past two seasons, are the 6-seed. All four of those matchups would draw interesting headlines for various reasons if the Tigers were to advance and face them.
It doesn’t appear the Tigers’ loss to Texas hurt them too much in terms of March Madness seeding, but this is just a projection. We won’t know the real implications of their loss until next Sunday.
