Harry Styles first rose to fame when he and One Direction won The X Factor and he has since gone on to have his own solo career
Harry Styles’ family heartache has been revealed as his older sister Gemma opens up about her severe depression battle.
The popstar’s sister Gemma has opened up about experiencing suicidal thoughts and being diagnosed with depression. She works as a writer and podcaster and says she felt “hollow and unworthy” and is now sharing her story in her book Why Am I Like This?
Gemma said: “One of the things shown to have the most positive impact on people having suicidal thoughts or in the depths of depression is to share stories when you go ‘that happened to me. I felt like that, and I feel better now’. I didn’t actively want to die but I so badly wanted to opt out of what my life had become it boiled down to the same longing.”
Gemma gave birth to her daughter earlier this year with her partner Michal Miynowski and despite feeling well now, she is worried that her depression could return.
She said: “In the back of my mind, sometimes I think that could happen to me again but I try not to dwell on it. I have come though it before and I could do it again.”
Gemma has said in the past that her famous brother Harry has been there to support her through her depression. She also revealed that he is a hands on uncle despite being here, there and everywhere with his job.
In an interview with The Sunday Times Gemma explained that her brother is always there to give her a “pep talk” when she needs it. She also thanked their mum Anne Twist for her support and “endless wisdom”.
She explained that the whole of the Styles family tend to be open about their mental health which she has found supportive over the years .
Harry found fame back in 2010 when his globally dominating boyband One Direction was formed on ITV talent show The X Factor. Since then, he has gone solo and released three albums – with his self-titled debut in 2017, follow-up Fine Line in 2019, and most recent record, Harry’s House, in 2022.
He has also enjoyed success on the road with his debut solo tour, titled Live on Tour, seeing him perform around the globe from 2017 until 2018, while his 173 date second tour, titled Love On Tour, saw him hit out songs at arenas from 2021 until 2023. Reports are suggesting the Music for a Sushi Restaurant singer will unleash a fourth album next year.
