Sunderland’s Chris Rigg was the goal hero in Saturday’s win over Boro
Midfield sensation Chris Rigg wants to add more goals to his game after netting the winner for Sunderland in the Wear-Tees clash against Middlesbrough.
The 17-year-old improvised with exceptional confidence to execute a neat back-heel after Seny Dieng was wrong-footed when George Edmundson cut out Patrick Roberts’ low strike. Rigg wheeled away as the Stadium of Light erupted in delight before the Lads dug deep to claim a precious three points – their fifth win in the opening six games in the Championship.
Regis Le Bris’ side showed a different side to their game with resilience and doggedness to hang on to the victory against strong opposition
“I told a few of the lads before the game that I was going to score,” he said. “It is my first goal of the season but hopefully there will be many more to come now. Last year I didn’t have enough numbers so I am just trying to add and add and add and hopefully I can help the team win like here.”
Le Bris’ team were defiant throughout and stood up to Middlesbrough’s threat as they held on to secure their fourth clean sheet of the campaign – and Luke O’Nien was full of praise for his team-mate Rigg following his match-winning goal.
“He is unbelievable,” he said. “Even in training some of the things he does are incredible. He is such a pleasure to watch. I am out of position half the time because I am just watching him.”
O’Nien added: “He is mesmerising. Chris, Jobe [Bellingham], Dan [Neil], Meps [Chris Mepham], who came into the side, it was a real team effort. Chris has been one of our best players so far this season, but he is just doing what he does. The rest of the team are so happy for him.”
