Luton Town submits planning application for Aecom-led 25,000 capacity stadium
Luton Town Football Club’s development arm, 2020 Developments, has submitted a planning application for a new 25,000-capacity stadium to Luton Borough Council.
The proposed stadium will be situated at the Power Court site, strategically located in Luton’s town centre.
The project has been entrusted to a multidisciplinary team, spearheaded by Aecom and Sisa, with support from Klaska and Trivandi for the pre-planning stage.
The design and planning efforts are further bolstered by contributions from AKT II (structural engineering), Max Fordham (mechanical, electrical, and sustainability engineering), WSP (planning consulting), AtkinsRéalis (cost consultancy and project management), KMC (highways and transport consulting), Buro Happold (crowd and pedestrian analysis) and Civic Engineers (site civils engineering).
Aecom is also providing landscaping consulting, while other firms involved include OFR (fire consulting), Cotswold Archaeology (heritage and archaeology consulting), JW Consultants (ecology and biodiversity consulting), Pinsent Masons (planning legal advisers) and CMS (contractor and commercial legal advisers).
The application also includes an updated outline for an accompanying hotel and music venue.
The football club said the planning application submission marks a significant milestone, both for Luton Town Football Club and the surrounding community, promising a modern, sustainable home for the team as well as acting as a catalyst for urban regeneration.
Pending planning approval, the project anticipates commencing construction within six months, with the goal of delivering the completed stadium by 2027, ready to host a potentially Premier League team.
Luton Town Football Club and 2020 Developments chief executive Gary Sweet highlighted the exhaustive efforts behind the project: “We assembled a team of elite architects, engineers and technicians who have crafted every aspect of our new stadium meticulously. Their work has surpassed conventional design norms, incorporating unique cultural characteristics to make this a familiar yet innovative home for us.
“The Power Court site brings with it numerous technical and commercial challenges, but the 2020 board has remained committed to rooting the Football Club within the community. The new venue aims to capture the same atmosphere, intimacy, and intensity found at the club’s current home, Kenilworth Road.”
2020 Developments chief operating officer Michael Moran acknowledged the extensive groundwork since acquiring the site in 2016: “Achieving this planning submission caps off years of work on land deals, legal consents, and substantial infrastructure challenges, such as relocating a major sub-station and diverting the River Lea. We’re now focused on a construction timeline aiming for completion in 2027, with sustainability at the forefront, aiming for a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.”
