Michigan’s Sherrone Moore Weighs in on Offseason Competition at Quarterback
The Michigan Wolverines got a solid effort from incumbent starting quarterback Davis Warren early in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Alabama as they jumped out to a 16-0 lead over Jalen Milroe and Kalen DeBoer’s team.
Warren’s injury gave way to Alex Orji taking the reins at the position while Michigan held on for a 19-13 New Year’s Eve win.
After the game, Michigan coach Sherrone Moore took time out to look ahead to the future of the position in Ann Arbor, making comments on a potential competition between transfer Mikey Keene and freshman Bryce Underwood.
He called the quarterback position for next season “open,” not long after he requested the return of Warren to his football team and praised Underwood for his work ethic.
“Yeah, it’s open competition,” Moore said. “Nobody is promised a certain spot.
“Everybody has got to earn it, and he (Keene) really understands that, even with the guys we’ve brought in. So he’s really excited to push the whole room.”
Keene threw for 2,892 yards last season with 18 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions for the Bulldogs, who lost to Michigan 30-10 at the Big House in week one.
The Chandler, Arizona native Keene was compared to “a poor man’s Kyle Murray” by Michigan defensive coordinator Wink Martindale recently, adding to hopes that he can become a plus player for Michigan next season.
