Oklahoma Sooners have a huge asset with this iteration of the coaching staff that they didn’t have last season
The Oklahoma Sooners made one hire this offseason that still isn’t getting quite the attention that to should be.
After a bad 2024, we knew there would be quite a few coaching changes. The offensive side of the ball on the coaching staff basically underwent a complete makeover. And, it was needed. Now, they have an asset on that side of the ball, which they can’t say they had last season.
The Sooners hired Kevin Wilson a few months ago, and it’s paying off in spring football
“I think it’s great,” former head coach and Oklahoma Sooners legend Bob Stoops told The REF. “I love Kevin [Wilson]. Listen, everybody knows that for the nine years he spent with us, I think the last five or six, he was the offensive coordinator and set records with Sam Bradford [former quarterback], and you know, the last five games of the year, over 60 points. So anyhow, he’s got great experience, easy to work with, and a really smart guy. He’d be an asset to anybody to have in your building. And hopefully, that’s the way it works for him.”
Kevin Wilson is an offensive analyst for the Sooners heading into the 2025 season. He previously served as OU’s co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach from 2002 to 2005, where he helped develop some of the best offenses and offensive lines we have seen. He was then the offensive coordinator from 2006 to 2010. He was head coach at Indiana from 2011 to 2016, going 26-47 with two bowl appearances.
From 2017 to 2022, he was Ohio State’s co-offensive coordinator. Most recently, he was head coach at Tulsa from 2023 to 2024, finishing 7-16 before being fired. And, now he’s back where he’s been best, as an assistant to the head coach specializing in one thing — offense.
I doubt this goes bad, in fact, I think it’s perfect for the Sooners. However, I will say that history shows a hire like this isn’t very smart, especially by head coach Brent Venables . Last offseason, the Oklahoma Sooners needed an offensive coordinator, so they went and got a former Sooners player and assistant. Seth Littrell, a guy who had a previous relationship with the university, ended up getting fired during the middle of last season.
I’m not saying that will happen here, or that Wilson will even be bad, but it’s certainly something to think about. To me, this is a great hire to help a side of the ball get as much experience as possible. And, Ben Arbuckle is still a young offensive coordinator, so why not get him some help with experience?
