Julian Sayin did what everyone has been waiting for from the Ohio State quarterback over the weekend

Ohio State is once again having an open quarterback battle for the starting job this offseason in search of Will Howard’s replacement.

While Ryan Day said that the battle was ‘neck and neck’ just last week , Julian Sayin looked the best of the three quarterbacks during Saturday’s spring game. The soon-to-be sophomore completed 17-of-24 passes and the offense scored in each of his first three drives. Sayin finished with 175 passing yards and a touchdown.

Following the spring game, head coach Ryan Day admitted that he had seen growth from Sayin on Saturday.

“There was good days, there was bad days. I think it’s just a matter of playing the game,” said Day. You can see the growth. I know we just need to play football with these guys and I will say there was growth today.”

Sayin is the expected starter for the 2035 season but Lincoln Kienholz hasn’t backed down from a challenge. The third-year quarterback went 12-of-18 passing for 158 yards and a pair of touchdowns during the spring game. Kienholz has had a strong spring and will at least be the team’s backup. Freshman Tavien St. Clair struggled early with two interceptions thrown but bounced back with a nice touchdown pass in the final play of Saturday’s scrimmage.

Sayin is a 6-foot-1, 203-pound quarterback who is much smaller than Howard was last season. He plays with a different style and his arm talent is very good. Sayin was the No. 3 quarterback last season as a true freshman and completed 5-of-12 passes for 84 yards and a touchdown in four games with the Buckeyes.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Buckeyes didn’t name a starter until the fall once again, that is typically how it has gone under Day. Sayin took a step in the right direction on Saturday for him to be that guy.
