JD Vance drops College Football Playoff trophy during White House visit

Vice President JD Vance had a pretty big issue with the College Football Playoff trophy during Ohio State’s visit to the White House on Monday.

The Buckeyes football team met President Trump at the White House on Monday and were honored for their CFP victory. Vice President Vance was also in attendance, as he previously represented Ohio in the Senate. At one point, Vance went to try and lift the trophy, but it fell apart as he did so and the base fell to the ground.

It should be noted that Vance did not actually break the trophy. The actual trophy portion is designed to separate from the base, which can be seen in some previous trophy lifts. Vance was presumably unaware of this, since he seemed to try and lift it from the base and tilted it too much while doing so.

Ultimately, the base of the trophy did wind up falling to the ground. That’s better than the trophy itself, which everyone involved managed to keep hold of.

Vance can take solace in the fact that there are plenty of instances of trophies getting damaged. One of Alabama’s BCS championship trophies once suffered a much worse fate than anything that happened here. This was certainly an awkward moment, but it doesn’t look like any harm was done.
