NFL general manager puts former South Carolina Gamecocks standout on notice
Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier didn’t mince words on Tuesday while talking about former South Carolina Gamecocks cornerback Cam Smith.
Grier met with reporters on Tuesday shortly after the news broke that Miami and superstar cornerback Jalen Ramsey are expected to mutually explore trade scenarios this offseason.
With Ramsey likely moving on from Miami, it means that Smith, a second round selection by the Dolphins in the 2023 NFL Draft, will have a big opportunity in 2025.
Grier told reporters that Smith “needs to come through in 2025”, while also noting that Miami “can’t hold his hand” and wait for him anymore.
“Cam Smith needs to come through, at the end of the day,” said Grier. “He’s gotta stay healthy and be on the field. He has shown some flashes, but this is a very big year for him. He knows what’s expected, because we can’t hold his hand and wait for him anymore.’
Smith played in just six games in 2024 while dealing with an injury.
The former Gamecocks standout has a big opportunity ahead of him in 2025. And based on Grier’s comments, it sounds like it could be Smith’s last chance to impress in Miami — otherwise, the team may start looking for other options.
Smith famously held Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jalin Hyatt in check in 2022 in a game that South Carolina won by 25 points. The talent is there for Smith to thrive in the NFL, but he’ll have to find a way to put it all together in 2025.
