Kirby Smart Expected To Hire Former Auburn All-SEC Defender to Georgia’s Staff

Georgia and head coach Kirby Smart are expected to make a late addition to the Bulldogs’ coaching staff ahead of the 2025 season.

UGA just wrapped up spring practice over the weekend by hosting its annual G-Day scrimmage game on Saturday. The staff seemed to be set headed into the long break, but it appears there is more room for a defensive assistant in Athens.

Acclaimed defensive line coach Tray Scott will reportedly receive some veteran help, as Smart and Co. are reportedly bringing in longtime defensive line coach Jimmy Brumbaugh, according to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports on Tuesday.

Brumbaugh, 48, was a First-Team All-SEC defensive lineman at Auburn in 1997. After a brief pro career, Brumbaugh entered the coaching ranks with Jacksonville State as a student assistant in 2004.

The Keystone Heights, Florida, native went on to serve on Les Miles’ staff at LSU, helping lead the Tigers to a national championship in 2007.

Georgia is the latest stop for one of the more experienced defensive line coaches in college football, including six stints in the SEC.

Brumbaugh also served stints at Louisiana Tech (2008-09) and Syracuse (2010-11) before spending one season (2012) at East Mississippi Community College, the home of “Last Chance U.”

Additionally, Brumbaugh coached the defensive line at Kentucky (2013-2016), Maryland (2017–2018), Colorado (2019) and Tennessee (2020). He also held co-defensive coordinator duties during his time at Maryland and Tennessee.

Brumbaugh’s recent stops include Oregon as a defensive analyst in 2021 before coaching the defensive line at Auburn the following season. He spent the last two seasons in the same role for Coastal Carolina.

Defending SEC champion Georgia will open the 2025 season at home against Marshall on Aug. 30.
