ARIZONA STATE MEN’S GYMNASTICS ICON SCOTT BARCLAY ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT AFTER 46 INCREDIBLE YEARS — EVAN SHAW TAKES OVER AS INTERIM HEAD COACH WHILE PROGRAM LAUNCHES NATIONAL SEARCH FOR NEXT LEADER!
CHANDLER, AZ — A true era is closing and a new chapter begins for the powerhouse Arizona State Men’s Gymnastics (ASG) team. Longtime Head Coach Scott Barclay, who led the program to an astounding 25 National Team Championships, has officially announced he will step down as head coach after this season. Barclay, who has dedicated nearly half a century to the Sun Devil Gymnastics legacy, will continue to serve as General Manager — ensuring the program’s vision and athlete support remain strong.
Stepping up immediately, Evan Shaw has been named Interim Head Coach. Shaw, a respected ASG alum (2003–06) and top-rated men’s international judge, rejoined the coaching staff last season to help the team clinch their milestone 25th national title. As the SDG Board of Directors begins its comprehensive search for only the 4th head coach in the program’s 70-year history, Shaw’s priority is to maintain Barclay’s legacy of excellence.
Also continuing with the team is Peter Wieging, who will serve his third year as assistant coach, bridging day-to-day training with front office operations.
“This is more than a team — it’s a family,” said Barclay. “I’m excited to support Evan and Peter as we keep this dream alive for future Sun Devils.”
The ASG team, a self-funded powerhouse competing in GymACT, has produced 223 All-Americans, 28 individual National Champions, and remains a beacon of opportunity for men’s collegiate gymnastics — all without NCAA funding.
