In a major move aimed at reinforcing one of the nation’s elite track and field programs, Texas Longhorns head coach Edrick Floréal has officially announced the hiring of Keilah Tyson as an assistant coach. Tyson, a former NCAA All-American and standout sprinter and jumper, will be responsible for coaching the sprints, horizontal jumps, and hurdles events — three areas where Texas has historically dominated.
Tyson brings a wealth of experience to Austin, both as an elite athlete and an emerging coaching talent. A Tennessee alum, she left a lasting mark in collegiate track and field with her speed and explosiveness. Her personal bests — including a 6.63m long jump and sub-23 second 200m dash — positioned her among the top athletes in the SEC during her prime. Since transitioning into coaching, Tyson has developed a reputation for her technical precision, athlete-first approach, and ability to elevate performance across the board.
Floréal’s decision to add Tyson signals a clear intent to build upon the Longhorns’ recent success and continue producing world-class athletes. With her experience competing and coaching at the highest levels, Tyson is expected to be a strong mentor for Texas’ sprint and jump corps.
“She’s not only an exceptional technician, but a fierce competitor who knows how to get the best out of her athletes,” said Floréal. “Her presence will energize the team in a big way.”
With the 2025 indoor and outdoor seasons fast approaching, Tyson’s addition comes at a perfect time. As the Longhorns look to defend their dominance at both the Big 12 and national level, all eyes will be on how this revamped coaching staff helps the next generation of Texas athletes reach new heights.
