Rangers £4.5m “Misfit” Breaks Silence After Ibrox Exit – “It Was the Best Decision of My Life”

Posted on April 16, 2026

Former Rangers winger Oscar Cortés has opened up on his departure from Ibrox, describing it as “the best thing I could have done” after rediscovering form following a difficult spell in Europe.

The 22-year-old Colombian endured a frustrating time after completing a £4.5 million move from Lens.

Shortly after joining permanently, he was sent out on loan to Spanish second-tier side Sporting Gijón.

However, opportunities were limited, with Cortés making just 11 appearances before the loan was cut short in January.

After returning briefly to Rangers’ training base for talks with new head coach Danny Rohl, a fresh opportunity soon emerged. Argentine club Atlético Huracán moved quickly to secure his services before the winter transfer window closed, offering the winger a route back to South America.

FIFA Loophole Enabled Surprise Move

Cortés’ switch to Huracán was made possible through a little-known FIFA regulation. Normally, players cannot represent more than two clubs in a single season. However, Article 5.3 allows an exception when leagues operate on different calendars.

This loophole allowed Rangers, Sporting Gijón, and Huracán to complete the deal, enabling Cortés to continue playing in Argentina, where the football calendar differs from Europe.

“I’m Much Better Now” – Cortés on Fresh Start

Speaking to AS Colombia, Cortés admitted he initially wanted to remain in Europe but ultimately pushed for the move once Huracán showed interest.

> “My intention was to stay in Europe, but things weren’t working out. When I heard Huracán wanted me, it felt right. I did everything possible to make it happen—I spoke to the manager and made the decision. It’s the best thing I could have done. I’m much better than before.”

Is There Still a Future at Rangers?

Cortés’ loan deal includes an option for Huracán to make the move permanent at the end of the year. Encouragingly, he has begun to rediscover his form, recently ending a goal drought of over two years.

His time at Rangers was heavily disrupted by injuries, including recurring hamstring, thigh, knee, and muscle problems, which prevented him from building momentum in Scotland.

Despite having three years remaining on his contract, Cortés’ recent comments suggest his future lies away from Ibrox.

After scoring in a 3–1 victory over Belgrano in the Torneo Apertura, he shared a message on Instagram:

> “Thank God for allowing me to score my first goal in this jersey. Very proud of the whole team—we will keep improving every day. Psalm 18:30: ‘God’s timing is perfect.’”
