Scottie Scheffler’s arrest at the PGA Championship is behind him, but the world’s No. 1 ranked golfer won’t be forgetting it any time soon.
All charges against Scheffler stemming from the incident outside Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville on May 17 were dropped last week, but Scheffler told reporters Tuesday he still had the matter on his mind.
“I definitely hadn’t moved past it,” Scheffler said, via the New York Post. “I would say that I still, you know, wouldn’t have a hundred percent moved past it because, yeah, the charges are dropped, but I still — now it’s almost more appropriate for people to ask me about it and ask me about the situation and, to be honest with you, it’s not something that I love reliving, just because it was fairly traumatic for me being arrested going into the golf course.
“It’s not something that I love talking about and it’s something that I’m hoping to move past, but when the charges are dropped, that’s kind of only the beginning of kind of getting past it, if that makes sense. So kind of operating through that now. It was definitely a bit of a relief, but not total relief because that’s something that will always, I think, kind of stick with me.”
Jefferson County attorney Mike O’Connell officially filed a motion to drop the charges, which included second-degree assault of a police officer and reckless driving, last Wednesday.
Both sides agreed not to pursue legal action against each other. Scheffler and his team had previously referred to his arrest as “an unfortunate misunderstanding.”
The two-time Masters champion was arrested after officers alleged he failed to stop as directed when traffic was halted due to a pedestrian fatality outside Valhalla in the early morning hours of May 17.
Scheffler was taken to jail and booked before being released on bail and allowed to play in the second round of the PGA Championship that morning.
“That mug shot, I’m sure, is not going anywhere anytime soon,” Scheffler said on Tuesday.
Scheffler eventually finished tied for eighth at the PGA Championship.
