Georgia head coach Kirby Smart continues being seen as top dog despite College Football Playoff flop

Georgia football and their head coach Kirby Smart intended to make their mark on the SEC in 2024. Smart was almost touted to be the next big thing in college football after Nick Saban’s retirement the way Georgia fared the whole season.

All until one bad day when Notre Dame wiped out Smart and his team in a 23-10 loss in the Sugar Bowl for UGA.

Still, 247 Sports’ Brad Crawford agrees with the argument as he best believes that Smart is still the No.1 head coach in the college football landscape heading into the 2025 season.

“Georgia struggled at times offensively in 2024, but Kirby Smart still managed to win the SEC and reach the playoff despite a treacherous schedule along with inconsistent play up front, in the backfield and at the quarterback position,” Crawford writes.

“That’s a testament to the Bulldogs’ winning mentality under the current regime, which has produced two national championships in the last four years. Others are gaining on Smart, but for now, he’s still the coach to beat in 2025 and the most respected in the game.”

This is Smart’s third consecutive year at the top of 247 Sports’ head coaches preseason ranking.

Georgia football also had a successful offseason, as the 247 Sports transfer portal tracker ranked them No. 1 overall.

Though losing Carson Beck to Miami wasn’t ideal, Smart appears confident in Gunner Stockton at QB. At worst, he could do more work in the portal to fortify the position.

It’s good to be Georgia in the NIL era. Even when they lose, the Dawgs are not down for long.
