Steve Sarkisian Considering Major Change For Texas Football
There were quite a few changes implemented in college football this past season, with conference realignment across the country taking place, as well as the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff.
Although teams travel is now a challenge, with teams from Florida traveling to the Bay Area in California to play in a conference game, for the teams that made it deep into the playoff, playing extra games likely stands out as the more significant challenge. For a program like Texas, who played in the conference title game and made it to the semifinal of the College Football Playoff, they played in 16 games total.
With teams having a chance to play as many as 17 games or 18 if they travel to Hawaii, coaches around the country are now attempting to figure out how to lessen the load on players. Something Steve Sarkisian is in the process of doing according to 247Sports’ Chip Brown, who revealed the head coach is considering making spring ball changes.
“While some schools have already announced their spring football dates, Sarkisian is still thinking about how he wants to structure the Longhorns’ spring football schedule, including the possibility of no spring game, sources close to the situation told Horns247 on Tuesday,” wrote Brown.
Sarkisian has yet to decide if he will do away with the spring game, but Brown confirmed that player health has become a major concern for the head coach.
Fans may not love missing out on seeing Arch Manning take over at quarterback in a couple months for a scrimmage, but they’d likely prefer to see him be healthy when the games matter.
The Longhorns finished the year 13-3 with the team’s final game coming on Jan. 10.
