Sun Devils continue slide down Big 12 standings

Only cellar-dweller Colorado has been worse than ASU in conference play

Arizona State’s January slide down the Big 12 standings has continued into February.

The Sun Devils (12-8 overall) are just 3-8 in conference play — including an 0-2 mark so far this month with home losses to Arizona (81-72 last Saturday) and Kansas State (71-70 on Tuesday).

Two of ASU’s three conference wins have come against Big 12 basement-dweller Colorado, now 0-11 in league play. The only other win was a shocking 65-57 road victory over then-No. 23 West Virginia.

It would take a tremendous turnaround for the Sun Devils to climb into the top half of the conference standings heading into the Big 12 tournament March 11-15 in Kansas City, Missouri. All 16 teams will advance to the tournament, with the top eight seeds earning first-round byes.

Arizona State’s best shot to start building some momentum comes Sunday at Oklahoma State, which has lost four of its last five games and joins ASU and Cincinnati with 3-8 conference records.

The Sun Devils’ schedule gets much more difficult after this weekend, with four of their final eight games pitting them against the Big 12’s top three teams: Houston (Feb. 18 in Tempe), Arizona (March 4 in Tucson) and Texas Tech (Feb. 12 in Lubbock and March 8 in Tempe).
