Although the Maple Leafs haven’t dismissed the idea of trading Mitch Marner, the latest proposal suggests they could acquire a former top draft pick from New York.
Despite making notable additions to their blue line this off-season, the Toronto Maple Leafs are still expected to pursue a major trade before the 2024/25 season starts.
Many of these discussions involve star forward Mitch Marner, and a new intriguing proposal has surfaced that could bring former No. 1 overall pick Alexis Lafrenière to the team, along with a skilled, hard-hitting defenseman.
Maple Leafs Get:
Alexis Lafreniere
Jacob Trouba
Rangers Get:
Mitch Marner
Timothy Liljegren
At first glance, this trade seems to lean towards benefiting the Rangers. Nevertheless, bringing in a tough leader like Jacob Trouba could be the key upgrade the Maple Leafs need for their blue line, especially with Jani Hakanpaa’s future in question.
Still, the likelihood of these teams wanting to trade with a conference rival is slim, and since Lafrenière isn’t as proven as Marner, Toronto might not be satisfied with this offer.
If they were to make a deal however, the focal point for Toronto would be former No. 1 pick Alexis Lafreniere, who took a major step forward in 2023/24, tallying a career high in goals with 28 and points with 57, while having a bright future ahead at just 22-years of age.
While this trade isn’t entirely out of the question, it might not be prudent for the Maple Leafs to exchange a win-now asset like Marner for a future prospect. So, it’s best not to expect this deal to materialize anytime soon.
