Texas’ Terry Joseph to join New Orleans Saints coaching staff

Terry has been with the Longhorns since 2021, he now heads to the NFL.

Texas Longhorns defensive backs coach Terry Joseph is set to join the New Orleans Saints, according to a report from Anwar Richardson of OrangeBloods.com on Monday.

Joseph, a New Orleans native, returns to his hometown after three seasons in Austin. He joined the Longhorns in 2021 as the defensive passing game coordinator and secondary coach. His departure adds another vacancy for head coach Steve Sarkisian to fill this offseason. The terms of the move were not immediately disclosed, although it is expected that he will join New Orleans fairly quickly.

An accomplished defensive backs coach at the Power Five level, Joseph’s tenure at Texas saw significant contributions from standout defensive backs. In 2023, Jahdae Barron emerged as a Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist, leading the team with 61 tackles (32 solo) and adding 4.5 tackles for loss, one interception, one forced fumble, and a career-high six pass breakups. The Longhorns recorded 16 interceptions on the season, ranking 10th nationally, with Terrance Brooks, Jerrin Thompson, and Michael Taaffe each securing three picks.

Prior to Texas, Joseph spent three seasons at Notre Dame (2018-20), serving as the defensive backs coach and defensive passing game coordinator. During his tenure, he helped the Fighting Irish reach two College Football Playoff appearances while posting a 33-5 record. Having worked at North Carolina (2017), Texas A&M (2014-16), Nebraska (2012-13), Tennessee (2010-11), and Louisiana Tech (2007-09). He developed several NFL defensive backs, including Julian Love, Troy Pride Jr., and Alohi Gilman, who all played under him at Notre Dame.

A former college baseball standout at Northwestern State, Joseph was a 13th-round MLB Draft selection by the Chicago Cubs and played four seasons in the minor leagues. Joseph’s departure marks yet another assistant who has left the Texas 2024 team, leaving Sarkisian to fill key vacancies ahead of the 2025 season. The moves marks the third Longhorn coach under Sarkisian to flock to a different program, or the NFL. Running backs Coach Tashard Choice headed to the Detroit Lions while safeties coach Blake Gideon flocked to Georgia Tech to be their defensive coordinator.
