CONGRATULATIONS: Texas women’s basketball inks No. 1 AP poll spot for first time in 21 years
Texas toppled Notre Dame for the No. 1 spot.
For the first time in 21 years the Texas Longhorns women’s basketball team is at the top of the NCAA Women’s Basketball AP Poll. On Monday, Texas claimed the top ranking in the Associated Press’ weekly poll. Texas last topped the AP’s poll on Feb. 16, 2004.
This is the fourth team to swap out for the No. 1 ranking from the AP this season. SEC opponent and rival, South Carolina opened the season out on top before UCLA claimed the top spot in the third week of action. Notre Dame overtook the Bruins last week when the AP temporarily crowned Notre Dame No. 1.
Texas is capitalizing on a Notre Dame overtime loss against North Carolina on Sunday. That placed Texas at the No. 1 spot.
Texas will have a busy week, with travel out to Georgia on Monday, Mississippi State on Thursday and then back home on Sunday for the regular season close out against Florida. The Longhorns stand at 26-2 overall, while boasting a 12-1 SEC Conference record.
