Amusing Radio Row appearance highlights strong bond between Commanders RBs

Austin Ekeler and Brian Robinson Jr. formed a close bond in 2024.

Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler formed a productive backfield partnership with the Washington Commanders in 2024. Their recent appearances before the Super Bowl highlighted the strong bond developed over a relatively short timeframe.

The Commanders had high hopes for this running-back duo in 2024. Those in power thought Robinson and Ekeler complimented each other well. The veteran free-agent signing chose Washington after things soured with the Los Angeles Chargers thanks in no small part to the presence of the Alabama product as the team’s workhorse.

Injuries impacted both as the campaign went on. They made encouraging starts as the Commanders became one of the league’s most efficient offenses under coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. Their regression down the stretch was concerning. Ekeler’s costly fumble in the NFC Championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles cast doubt on his future with the organization beyond 2024.

That’s for the future. For now, Ekeler and Robinson are enjoying each other’s company away from the gridiron. That was reflected in a special appearance together on Radio Row, which highlighted the strong connection between the two.

Commanders RB duo get quizzed during FanSided’s Radio Row interview

Robinson and Ekeler spoke with Iain MacMillan from FanSided, where they took part in a hilarious quiz, answering questions about one another are revealing a locker room secret for good measure.

What came across was Ekeler and Robinson’s competitive spirit. The former third-round pick is a man of few words, but the fire within was obvious despite the jovial nature of this interaction.

The running back tandem also confirmed who’s in charge of music in Washington’s locker room. Ekeler declared that the responsibility was taken on by defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis before the Commanders made him surplus to requirements. After that, it fell on Efe Obada, who’ll probably be moved on at some stage during the 2025 offseason.

This was a fantastic insight into their respective personalities. Ekeler is more comfortable with a microphone in his hand. Robinson is more reserved with those he’s unfamiliar with. But together, it works.

Whether the Commanders move forward with the duo next season is anyone’s guess. Both are under contract for another season. That should not stop general manager Adam Peters from finding another explosive element if the right opportunity presents itself, potentially via the 2025 NFL Draft.

Regardless of what the future holds, Robinson and Ekeler’s friendship will stand the test of time. Unfortunately, their respective statuses in Washington are out of their control.
