Texas Women’s Hoops Ends 21-Year Drought
Texas Longhorns women’s basketball will return from an eight-day hiatus tonight when visiting Georgia and will do so as the top team in the entire country.
Texas was ranked No. 1 in the latest AP Top 25 poll released on Monday, marking the program’s first No. 1 ranking since February of 2004. The Longhorns were able to move up as a result of previous No. 1 Notre Dame falling to NC State in double overtime on Sunday.
The top spot in the AP poll is well deserved as UT currently boasts a 26-2 record in its very first season of SEC play. Prior to the aforementioned hiatus, the Longhorns successfully completed a difficult gauntlet where they knocked off three top 10 opponents in South Carolina, Kentucky, and LSU all in the same week.
The team is riding the wave of a 10-game winning streak heading into tonight’s matchup in Athens and is currently in line for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament according to ESPN bracket analyst Charlie Creme. The Longhorns are vying for their first Final Four appearance since 2003, where they fell to eventual national champion UConn in the semifinals.
The following year’s Texas squad was the one that achieved the program’s most recent No. 1 ranking, riding a nine-game winning streak to the top spot before being knocked off by Texas Tech in Lubbock. That 2003-04 team would eventually fall to LSU in the Sweet Sixteen.
Following tonight’s showdown against UGA, UT will have just two regular season games remaining with a trip to Mississippi State this Thursday before hosting Florida on Sunday. The Horns are currently in the driver’s seat to win t
