Virginia Tech women’s basketball snubbed from ACC Awards

The Hokies failed to land any awards for the 2024-25 season.

The ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament gets underway on Wednesday with three games. The Virginia Tech women won’t play until Thursday at 1:30 p.m. after earning the No. 8 seed and they will face No. 9 Georgia Tech in the second round with the winner getting a date with top-seeded North Carolina State.

In the first year of Megan Duffy in Blacksburg after taking over Kenny Brooks, the former Marquette coach has the Hokies squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble and a second win over the Yellow Jackets would be very beneficial for their chances. It was a very good first year for Duffy at Virginia Tech in a loaded ACC.

They finished 9-9, claimed the eighth seed in the conference tournament and did it with a brand new roster that was shorthanded. Matilda Ehk, Rose Micheaux and Carleigh Wenzel were the only players returning that saw some time last season under Brooks, yet Duffy has the Hokies knocking on the NCAA Tournament door.

Virginia Tech snubbed from ACC awards in 2024-25

I’m not saying that Virginia Tech players should have littered the awards list this season, but not to have anyone is certainly a noticeable absence. Did the Hokies have a player who should have made the All-ACC First Team? No, but neither Rose Micheaux nor Carleigh Wenzel are on the second team, it’s surprising. Again, not both, but just one.

Surprisingly, Wenzel didn’t get any recognition for ACC Most Improved Player as she really has come along and turned into a very good ACC guard at both ends of the floor. Zoe Brooks from North Carolina State is a great choice, but Wenzel deserved a little more pub for it.

Duffy has done a tremendous job in her first season at Virginia Tech and to have them 9-9 in the ACC is impressive, but not impressive enough to garner any recognition. Again, I’m not saying anyone should have been winning many awards, but no recognition is a little surprising.
