Freshman Michigan defensive lineman enters NCAA transfer portal
Defensive lineman Owen Wafle is the latest Michigan player to enter the NCAA transfer portal, a team spokesman confirmed to MLive on Thursday.
Wafle, a true freshman, did not appear in any games during the 2024 season. He has four years of college eligibility remaining.
Though the winter transfer portal window has officially closed, NCAA rules allow players on teams in the postseason an additional five days to enter. Michigan is coming off a 19-13 win over Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Tuesday.
Listed at 6-foot-2 and 298 pounds, Wafle was never a factor this year, buried on the Wolverines’ depth chart up front. A Middletown, N.J. native, Wafle was a composite four-star recruit at The Hun School, where he was a disruptive defensive lineman and fullback.
Wafle was recruited to Michigan by former defensive line coach Mike Elston, who left after the 2023 season to join Jim Harbaugh’s Los Angeles Chargers staff. He is the 16th scholarship player from Michigan to enter the NCAA transfer portal since the end of the regular season, with the Wolverines required to pair down their roster to 105 ahead of the fall.
