Why Florida Being No. 1 In March Madness Matters To Todd Golden
Usually, teams who already have a spot in March Madness tend to lay low during the SEC Tournament. It keeps the players from unnecessary fatigue and prevents any injuries heading into the Big Dance. Coach Todd Golden and the Florida Gators may not be the firmest believers in this though.
Florida is a lock to either be a second or first-seed squad for March Madness. However, Coach Todd Golden is not taking any chances. He knows that winning the SEC Tournament secures them a top-seeding in March Madness and this would matter a lot.
He outlined his intentions of wreaking havoc on their stacked conference before their first game, via Mark Long of the Associated Press and Tampa Bay Times.
“To be honest, I think it’s really important to us… We definitely want the 1 seed, don’t get me wrong. At this point, I think we’re in a really good spot. Pride-wise, we’re going to do everything we can to get this 1 seed. But I’m confident in our potential, whether we end up getting it or we’re a high 2,” the Florida head coach declared.
Why does Coach Golden think that it’s important for the Gators to usurp the Auburn Tigers and Duke Blue Devils for the No. 1 spot in March Madness?
Well, it all boils down to history. 16 out of the last 23 national championship-winning squads were all top-ranked teams in March Madness. So, Florida wants to play the game of odds and numbers.
It all starts when they face whoever does better between the Missouri Tigers, the LSU Tigers, and the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
