West Virginia AD rips selection committee after tournament snub
The NCAA selection committee is never going to make everybody happy when it comes to the 68-team tournament field, but there are some instances where they really do get it wrong. That seemed to happen on Sunday when they left the West Virginia Mountaineers out of the field in favor of North Carolina.
That decision did not sit well with anybody from West Virginia, and it especially bothered athletic director Wren Baker who did not hide his disappointment with the committee.
Baker called West Virginia’s omission from the tournament a “terrible travesty,” in a social media post that was accompanied by the team’s resume.
That resume includes six Quad 1 wins, including five away from home, four wins against ranked teams including three top-10 teams and zero losses against Quad 3 and Quad 4 teams.
It is an outstanding resume, and one that probably should have earned a spot in the tournament.
Instead, West Virginia was the first team out behind a team like North Carolina that went 1-12 against Quad 1 opponents.
Head coach Darian DeVries also released a statement on Sunday night.
The problem with West Virginia was not necessarily its resume. It might have simply been the fact it did not have the reputation and brand name power of North Carolina.
