It Certainly Looks Like Darian DeVries Conned West Virginia Basketball

On Tuesday, reports surfaced that West Virginia head basketball coach Darian DeVries was leaving the Mountaineers to fill the vacancy at Indiana less than 48 hours after WVU was snubbed a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
After a 19-13 (10-10) season, the Mountaineers were more than deserving to be in the field, but it appears that it might’ve been a silver lining—at least for the long term.
West Virginia athletic director Wren Baker recently said that he never had a chance to counter the Hoosiers’ offer in hopes of keeping DeVries and even went as far as to say that WVU was ready to do what it took “within reason” to keep him around.
As more details unfold, however, it’s starting to appear that this deal was done, at least in principle, long before Sunday’s slight.
First of all, there’s the random Indiana fan account that claimed a verbal agreement had been made for a month, and did so last week.
Coincidence? Maybe.
But, it sure sounds like DeVries has been working on this thing for a lot longer than a few days.
In fact, he openly admits that he was in communication with Indiana during the 2024-25 season.
Naturally, WVU fans are pissed about the situation, and with DeVries claiming he could see himself being in Morgantown for “a very long time” less than a year ago, they smell something fishy about this whole situation.
To make matters worse, there’s some interesting things lining up with Tucker DeVries’ season-ending injury early in the year and how he will now be able to play in 2025-26… for Indiana.
If you want to dive into that rabbit hole, here’s an incredibly interesting thread on the matter.
Luckily, WVU has one of the best athletic directors in the business and will be back on their feet in no time. Regardless, it certainly looks like DeVries is Public Enemy No. 1 in Morgantown, and that’s probably going to be the case for a good long while.
