David Goffin’s win over Alexander Zverev in the fourth round of the 2024 Shanghai Masters has delighted tennis fans. Many have expressed their happiness at the Belgian’s ‘renaissance’ as he reached the quarterfinals of the Masters 1000.
Goffin had been struggling with his form over the past few years. However, it seems that the former World No. 7 is getting back in his groove at the Shanghai Masters.
The veteran kicked off his campaign with a win over James Duckworth. He followed it up with statement wins over Lorenzo Mussetti and Marcos Giron in subsequent rounds, with both victories coming from a set down.
David Goffin stunned second seed Alexander Zverev 6-4, 7-5 to reach the final eight in Shanghai. The Belgian, who recently became a father, signed E on the camera during the customary signing and said he wanted to show his daughter he could be a good player.
Fans expressed their delight at the result on X (formerly Twitter). One fan joked how Alexander Zverev would now blame Goffin for not winning Majors, alluding to his tirade during his third-round match against Tallon Griekspoor.
“Zverev ready to blame Goffin cos he’s not winning slams,” the fan joked.
Another questioned if the Belgian was ‘turning back the clock’ with this emphatic win.

After a monumental win over Alexander Zverev, David Goffin will now have to face seventh seed Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Shanghai Masters. This will be the third meeting between the two men, the first since 2021, with both of them winning a match each.
Fritz has been in fine form during the Masters 1000 event and is yet to drop a set. He decimated 12th seed Holger Rune 6-1, 6-2 in just 55 minutes to reach the quarterfinals.
The winner of their match will play either fourth seed Novak Djokovic or 19-year-old Jakub Mensik in the semifinals.
