The Boston Red Sox are looking like they will not offer qualifying offers to their slugging outfielder Tyler O’Neill, and starting pitcher Nick Pivetta, per Sean McAdam. The two would cost around $35 million in 2025.
Both O’Neill and Pivetta had solid years, and were decent and good players for the team. However, they probably aren’t worth what their offers would give them. O’Neill’s qualifying offer was for around $20 million, and Pivetta was for an extension of four years, $60 million.
O’Neill slashed.241/.336/.511/.847 with 31 homers and 18 doubles. He also led the team in homers as well.
Pivetta was very hot and cold. He finished the season with a 6-12 record, 4.14 ERA, 1.126 WHIP and 10.6 K/9 in 27 games.
What the Sox should do is enter free agency looking to replace these guys. A player like Teoscar Hernandez would be a great upgrade for O’Neill, and a pitcher like Max Fried would be a great upgrade for Pivetta.
O’Neill and Pivetta were good players for Boston, it’s just that they aren’t worth keeping with their new contracts. Good luck to them if they enter free agency, and hopefully the Sox pick up some really good replacements.
