The Parramatta Eels have released Clint Gutherson from the final year of his contract, effective immediately.
According to Nine and Sydney Morning Herald journalist Michael Chammas, the Eels board met on Wednesday night and agreed to grant the fullback his request for a release.
Gutherson is reportedly on the verge of signing a three-year deal with the Dragons less than 24 hours after the club and skipper Ben Hunt mutually agreed to part ways.
He has been at the club since 2016 after leaving Manly where he played just five games in his first three seasons in the NRL.
Gutherson’s early career was plagued by serious injuries but since joining Parramatta he has played at least 18 club games every year.
He has been captain of the club and a fan favourite, forming a close bond with former coach Brad Arthur.
Arthur was sacked early in the 2024 season, and it seems new coach Jason Ryles has other plans for Gutherson’s salary.
His fullback spot could now go to boom rookie Isaiah Iongi.
Iongi was snapped up by the Eels as retribution for losing fellow gun youngster Blaize Talagi to Penrith.
The Eels already have halves Mitchell Moses and Dylan Brown on big money and the release of Gutherson will free up serious money under the salary cap.
Ryles has also let go veteran prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard, who is headed to the Titans.
